Suncorp Stadium Tour

Kristin got a rare invitation for a behind the scenes tour at the Suncorp Stadium held by a world class Rugby referee.

The Stadium site used to be a part of the North Brisbane Burial Grounds and was the principal place of burial of Brisbane residents up to 1875. Following concerns regarding health issues, the cemetery was officially closed that same year.

The public pressure increased to use the area for recreational purposes and so this resulted in the relocation of 99 remains and 128 memorials to Toowong and other cemeteries. By mid 1914, most of the remaining headstones were removed to the Memorial Cemetery, and subsequently the Toowong and Lutwyche Cemeteries.

The 6.2 hectare site was then fenced off and declared a public recreation reserve and called Lang Park.

The construction of the modern Suncorp Stadium commenced 2001 and was completed 2003 and it is mostly used for the Rugby League and Union games held in Brisbane. However, Robbie Williams held his concert here 2006 as it was the only staditum large enough in the state, and because it was such a success Queensland Government has now decided to continue hosting very large concerts at the stadium.

The ground today has had a special place in the hearts of Queenslanders as one of the sporting cathedrals of the state and city.
